Their origins date back to the dawn of writing and their subsequent history is entwined with that of the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the development of science, the cultural influence of print, and the social impact of European colonialism.

As long as humanity has had beliefs in a higher power, the use of magic, spells, curses, and incantations have featured widely across cultures.

Witchcraft of some sort has probably existed since humans first banded together in groups. Simple sorcery or the use of magic accessible to ordinary peoplesuch as setting out offerings to helpful spirits or using charms, can be found in almost all traditional societies.

Prehistoric art depicts magical rites to ensure successful hunting, and also seems to depict religious rituals involving people dancing in animal costumes.

10 Ancient Books That Promise Supernatural Powers

Shamanism, the practice of contacting spirits through dream work and meditative trances, is probably the oldest religion, and early shamans collected much knowledge about magic and magical tools. Witches of ancient Sumeria and Babylonia invented an elaborate Demonology.

They had a belief that the world was full of spirits and that most of these spirits were hostile. Each person was supposed to have their own spirit which would protect them from demons and enemies, which could only be fought by the use of magic including amulets, incantations, and exorcisms. Western beliefs about witchcraft grew largely out of the mythologies and folklore of ancient peoples, especially the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans.

Witches in ancient Egypt purportedly used their wisdom and knowledge of amulets, spells, formulas, and figures to bend the cosmic powers to their purpose or that of their clients. The Greeks had their own form of magic, which was close to a religion, known as Theurgy the practice of rituals, often seen as magical in nature, performed with the intention of invoking the action of the gods, especially with the goal of uniting with the divine and perfecting oneself.

Some argue, however, that the real roots of witchcraft and magic as we know it comes from the Celts, a diverse group of Iron Age tribal societies that flourished between about BC and AD in northern Europe especially the British Isles. Believed to be descendants of Indo-Europeans, the Celts were a brilliant and dynamic people, gifted artists, musicians, storytellers, and metalworkers, as well as expert farmers and fierce warriors much feared by their adversaries, the Romans.

They were also a deeply spiritual people, who worshipped both a god and a goddess. They believed in reincarnation and that after death they went to the Summerland for rest and renewal while awaiting rebirth.

By about BC, a priestly class known as the Druids had developed, who became the priests of the Celtic religion as well as teachers, judges, astrologers, healers, midwives, and bards.

The religious beliefs and practices of the Celts, their love for the land, and their veneration of trees the oak in particular grew into what later became known as Paganism, although this label is also used for the polytheistic beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

Blended over several centuries with the beliefs and rituals of other Indo-European groups, this spawned such practices as concocting potions and ointments, casting spells and performing works of magic, all of which along with many of the nature-based beliefs held by the Celts and other groups became collectively known as witchcraft in the Medieval Period.

Several texts have been devoted to this practice, outlining complicated and mysterious rituals that were presented as the key to achieving communion with otherworldly spirits.

The Greek magical papyri Latin Papyri Graecae Magicae, abbreviated PGM is the name given by scholars to a body of papyri from Greco-Roman Egypt which each contains a collection of magical spells, formulae, hymns, and rituals. The materials in the papyri date from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD. The manuscripts came to light through the antiquities trade, from the 18th century onwards. The texts were published in a series, and individual texts are referenced using the abbreviation PGM plus the volume and item number.

Each volume contains a number of spells and rituals. According to Hans Dieter Betz, the Greek magical papyri known today only present a small fraction of what once existed, in forms of books.

Betz cites Ephesus in the Acts of the Apostles Acts 10 for book burnings. On the account of Suetonius, Augustus ordered the burning of 2, magical scrolls in 13 BC.

It is known that philosophers of the Neopythagorean and Neoplatonic schools, as well as Gnostic and Hermetic groups, used magical books and hence must have possessed copies. But most of their material vanished and what we have left are their quotations.

The pages contain spells, recipes, formulae, and prayers, interspersed with magic words and often in shorthand, with abbreviations for the more common formulae. These spells range from impressive and mystical summonings of dark gods and daemons to folk remedies and even parlour tricks; from portentous, fatal curses, to love charms, cures for impotence and minor medical complaints. Throughout the spells found in the Greek Magical Papyri, there are numerous references to figurines.

The figurines are made of various materials, usually corresponding to the type of spell, but often with liminal properties, as is frequent in a number of elements of Greek Magic. Some have been discovered in lead coffins, upon which the spell or curse has been inscribed. The magical papyri include instructions on how to summon a headless demon, open doors to the underworld and, protect yourself from wild beasts.

Perhaps most tantalizing of all they describe how to summon a supernatural being an entity from another world who does whatever you desire.Linley, too, could feel that his body was now far stronger than it had been in the past. Previously, his body was that of a warrior of the fourth rank, but now, he had suddenly reached the sixth rank. This was the inherent ability of the Dragonblood Warriors. Linley slightly nodded. He, too, wanted to get a sense of what level of power his body now possessed when under the Dragonform transformation.

Immediately, Linley began to exert his control over the Dragonblood battle-qi that had been compressed into a quasi-crystal at the dantian location, below his navel. One stream after another of black liquid began to flow from his dantian to his body, his limbs, and his bones. He felt so incredibly powerful. He had just begun his training in this area, but he already possessed enormous strength. As fast as a streak of fire, Linley charged into middle of the wide cave, then delivered a powerful blow to the cave wall.

With an earth-shaking sound, rocks begin to fall down from the cave walls. His arm pierced all the way into the stone wall, and to Linley, it felt as though it was as easy as piercing his arm into soft mud. The black scales protecting his body right now were far more powerful than even the jadestone armor his Earthguard spell provided. Sometimes he would land on the ground, while at other times, he would rise into the mid-air.

Sometimes, he would use all of his strength while smashing his legs into the wall with ferocious kicks, while other times he would viciously pummel the cave ceiling with his fists and allow the rocks to fall on his body.

But the highly experienced Doehring Cowart should have been able to estimate his strength through the destructive power he had just unleashed. Perhaps you have inherited the high movement speed inherent to Armored Razorback Wyrms. Your speed should be on par with highly agile warriors of the eighth rank. He knew that this Dragonform of his had some sort of connection with the Armored Razorback Wyrm, so it made sense that this Dragonform of his was similar in many ways to the Armored Razorback Wyrm.

According to the books that I read, once a Dragonblood Warrior has reached the early ninth rank of power in human form, then in Dragonform, he will possess the power of an early Saint-level combatant.

But once his human form reaches the Saint-level, then in Dragonform, he will still only be a Saint-level. His battle ability, however, will be somewhat improved. The purpose of assuming the Dragonform was because early on, a normal human being would not be able to utilize all of the power held within the Dragonblood in his veins.

Only after using the Dragonform would they be able to summon forth all of their power.

But once they reached the Saint-level, and had totally mastered and harnessed the effective power of their Dragonblood, then when they assumed the Dragonform, their increase in power would be fairly small.

Hurry up and dispose of the corpses of those two magical beasts. The two of them have a Saint-level magicite core and a draconic magicite core of the ninth rank. Linley knew that the value of a magicite core of the ninth rank was worth up to five million gold coins, an incredible amount of money.

Perhaps most tantalizing of all, they describe how to gain a supernatural assistant, an otherworldly entity who does your bidding. The most commonly found spells in the Papyri are divination spells—ceremonies that offer you visions of the future. After being placed into a deep trance, the child sees images flickering in the flame.

This ceremony describes how to ascend through seven higher planes of existence and communicate with the deity Mithras. Alongside are spells and incantations to channel the occult energies of planets and stars to achieve power and enlightenment. The Picatrix is perhaps most notorious for the obscenity of its magic recipes. These gruesome and potentially deadly concoctions are designed to induce altered states of consciousness and out-of-body experiences.

Not for the faint of the heart, their ingredients include blood, bodily excretions, and brain matter mixed with copious amounts of hashish, opium, and psychoactive plants. Like most Icelandic magic of the period, the Galdrabok relies heavily on staves —runes that have magical properties when carried on the body, carved on objects, or written out. Among the staves drawn in the Galdrabok are ones to attract and curry the favor of powerful men, incite fear in your enemies, and put someone to sleep.Search for: Search. Frank Klaassen uses these texts, which he argues are representative of the overwhelming majority of magical practitioners, to explain how magic changed during this period and why these developments were crucial to the formation of modern magic.

The Boxgrove Manual is a work of learned ritual magic that synthesizes material from Henry Cornelius Agrippa, the Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy, Heptameron, and various medieval conjuring works. Klaassen painstakingly traces how the scribes who created these two manuscripts adapted and transformed their original sources.

In so doing, he demonstrates the varied and subtle ways in which the Renaissance, the Reformation, new currents in science, the birth of printing, and vernacularization changed the practice of magic. Illuminating the processes by which two sixteenth-century English scribes went about making a book of magic, this volume provides insight into the wider intellectual culture surrounding the practice of magic in the early modern period.Alternately lush and inviting, magical and mysterious, dark and forbidding, forests have loomed large in literature, music and art for hundreds of years.

Join us on a powerfully nostalgic journey through the forests of childhood classics, from Narnia to Harry Potter…. Something cold and soft was falling on her. A moment later [Lucy] found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night-time with snow under her feet and snowflakes falling through the air… — CS Lewis, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe But here, when Lucy first enters Narnian forest through the back of the wardrobe in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, she finds its branches blanketed in snow and ice.

Those frozen trees aren't the only woods to feature in the Narnia universe. The Enchanted Wood loomed up big and dark. The trees spoke to one another softly. This beloved series, dating back to the s, follows the adventures of three children, Jo, Bessie and Fanny, who venture into the woods near their home and discover The Magic Faraway Tree. One day when he was out walking, [Pooh] came to an open place in the middle of the forest, and in the middle of this place was a large oak tree, and, from the top of the tree, there came a loud buzzing-noise.

Winnie-the-Pooh sat down at the foot of the tree, put his head between his paws and began to think… — AA Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh AA Milne set all of Pooh and Christopher Robin's exploits in the real location of Ashdown Forest — a medieval hunting forest in East Sussex composed of open heath alongside wooded areas.

The game of Poohsticks, for example, was originally played on a bridge in Posingford Wood — where, fittingly, you can now queue up with other Poohvians for selfies. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper into the Forest, until the path became almost impossible to follow because the trees were so thick. Harry thought the blood seemed to be getting thicker The forest is a constant in the Harry Potter novels: a place where illicit meetings are staged, secrets are concealed and stark warnings offered to wizardkind.

As symbols for danger and the unknown go, the Forbidden Forest is pretty strong. So, what do you do with the students who have proved themselves the naughtiest, boldest, and most rule-breaking ever to have attended Hogwarts?

What could possibly go wrong? She ran off the path into the woods looking for flowers. Each time she picked one she thought that she could see an even more beautiful one a little way off, and she ran after it, going further and further into the woods… — Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Little Red Cap In most of the stories, a naive young girl in red is sent out alone into the woods to deliver food to her grandmother. In some versions, the wolf stalks Red Riding Hood through the forest, eats the grandmother, then lies in wait wearing her clothes.

In some versions, Red Riding Hood escapes the wolf; in some she is eaten. Most children today are told the version of the story where Red Riding Hood is eventually rescued by a huntsman — or woodcutter.

The symbolism could hardly be more potent. There was a silence, for suddenly the dark and unknown forest, so near at hand, made itself felt as a great brooding presence, full of secret purpose. Each forest has an important role to play in the tangled plot of the Lord of the Rings trilogy; they often help the characters to transition from one part of the story to the next.Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.
